In October 1942, after the Dieppe raid, the Commando changed internally from a company to a troop organisation, with five troops of some 65 men. “A” Troop was commanded by Captain Mike Ephraums MC RM (who was killed in Italy the following year). He was a keen fan of the novels by Leslie Charteris, most of which revolved around the adventures of one Simon Templar, whose pseudonym was “The Saint”. The “Saint’s” emblem was a matchstick figure with a halo, and this is still used today by A Company.
