Karl Penta is a tough, wiry Liverpudlian with a Scouser's natural dark humor. He has served in many of the world's hotspots: Lebanon, Sri Lanka, and Kosovo. It was while in Sri Lanka that he saw an advertisement for ex-military personnel to work abroad. Soon Penta found himself in Surinam. His brief: to bring down the government. Within weeks, the government was on its knees. The twists and turns of this operation are still going on, but Penta feels it is now safe to tell the whole story in this book.

I first learned of Karl Penta reading a copy of Soldier of Fortune magazine (where I was a foreign correspondent at the time). I was fascinated by the story of this British "merc" and the shoestring guerrilla war being fought in this little South American backwater that I'd never heard of. Suriname. Bob Brown, the editor/publisher, actually visited Penta in his camp where he was training Surinamese insurgents. I would later serve in Croatia and Bosnia with foreign "volunteers" who knew Penta from the International Brigade unit in Osijiek. He was always referred to as being a consummate professional. His book reads well, a cautionary tale for those who would sign on for money with somebody else's cause.

After buying this book in a cooky crime book store in Melbourne, I found myself unable to do anything but read it for the following few days. 'Karel' tells an amzaing, simply-written tale about his time in Surinam during the mid-80's where he lead an army destined to break the back of the country's dictatorial government. If you like a good, factual action story that is engaging and fast moving, then I highly recommend this. The only downfall is that it wasn't long enough!
